Introduction

One Planet Living is a comprehensive sustainability framework, guiding the design and development of thriving communities that encourage all to live within the resources available on our planet – because we only have one!

An action plan that embraces the ten Principles for One Planet Living will ensure that The River District unfolds in harmony with the environment and builds community. Our progress and success will be measured through regular reporting on our defined actions, outcomes, and indicators.

  1. No residence more than 5 minutes from a trail, greenway, or park

  2. Wide sidewalks and bike lanes to encourage active transportation
  3. Planting mix to reduce harmful chemicals throughout
  4. Measures to monitor and communicate air quality

  1. Support of small, local, and minority owned businesses

  2. Land dedicated to a multi-modal transit stop with the Charlotte Area Transit System (CATS)
  3. Partnership with local non-profit organizations to educate and encourage bicycle use
  4. Inclusion of EV charging stations throughout

7. Travel and Transport

  1. Mass Timber Construction to reduce carbon impact of flagship office building, CLT International
  2. Targeting a reduction of embodied carbon in developer-controlled buildings
  3. Repurposing of trees removed in development

8. Materials and Products

  1. Partnership to offer community-wide composting
  2. Exploring opportunities to offer enhanced recycling
  3. Construction waste diversion targets with all developer-controlled construction

9. Zero Waste

  1. Energy efficiency promoted through recommended certifications (LEED, NGBS, Energy Star) and solar PV
  2. Potential partnership with Duke Energy to offer a net-zero energy pilot to single family homes as well as future amenity buildings

  3. Energy dashboard and community app to offer real-time energy use data and educate residents and tenants on how their actions impact energy use

We continue to explore new possibilities to support the adoption of One Planet Living. This list will grow and
evolve as the community itself develops. We are open to new ideas and partnerships that align with this vision
and support our action plan.
